Abstract
An ecological survey of early childhood nutrition was carried out among 90 children, aged 5 to 6, of the Y. C. Kindergarten located in the Yowido apartment compound of Seoul, between July 31 and August 13, 1980. Family background:
Approximately one hundred percent of the fathers were educated at or above the college level, while. 84% of the mothers had completed college. The majority of the fathers were office, government or business-employees, while 98% of the mothers were unemployed. Average age of fathers was 37.3 years; of mothers, was 33.1 years. Average number of family members was 4. 6, and the majority of the children were from nuclear families.
Weaning practice:
About 31% of the subjects had been breast-fed; 37% had been bottle-fed: and others had been combination-fed before the introduction of supplementary foods. The Number of breast-fed children was markedly lower than that previously found by the authors in the low income area of Seoul and in rural areas.
Initiation, of supplementary feeding between 4 and 6 months of age was found among 61016 of subjects, and 30% of subjects began to be introduced to the supplementary foods before 4¢¥ months of age. The reasons for introduction of supplementary feeding were various, such as: baby wants to share new foods from adult family meals (3.50/o) ; breast milk no longer provides all nutrients (54. 1%) ; physicians: and neighbors encourage supplementary feeding (3. 5%) ; maternal employment (2.4%) ; insufficient breast milk secretion (29. 4%) ; and others (7. 1%). The supplementary foods given most frequently; at the beginning of weaning were various, such as: eggs (21.5%) ; soup (10.8%) ; imported baby foods (10.2%) ; cereal (7.2%) ; cow¢¥s milk (3. 6%) others (0. 6%).
As for age of termination of breast feeding, 48% of the subjects were between 7 and 10 months of .age 27.9% were 8 months old or young or; 14% were 13 to 18 months old; 9.3% were 19 to 24 months -Old and; 1.1 % were more than 24 months old.
Food habits;
This study indicated that respondents liked ham, sausage, beef, eggs, seaweed, fruit, etc and disliked beef liver, beef organs, pork, Korean water cress, edible¢¥ chrysanthemum leaves, leek,¢¥ garlic, boiled rice combined with beans or other grains. Mothers obtained knowledge and information about, weaning from various sources, such as: news papers, magazines and books (64. 5 %) ; radio and TV (13.6%) ; mothers¢¥ gathering (9%) ; physicians (6.5%) ;and special lectures (4.5%). The frequency of meal skipping was shown much higher here than the 7-x13 percent in the low income area of Seoul, reported by Kim et al. Approximately 44% of the subjects skipped one meal every one to three days 37,¡Æ% skipped one meal each day; 19% skipped one -meal each week. The most common reasons for skipping a meal was the excessive intake of snacks before the regular meal.
